Torque Rumi I, Kazan Russia
In collaboration with Dara Kirmizitoprak.
Torque Rumi ONE is a proposal for a single high rise towers in Kazan, Russia. The site for the tower is located adjacent to the bay in downtown Kazan, with views across the water to the historic Kremlin. The project’s context & relationship to the city of Kazan therefore demand that the Torque Rumi ONE project fulfill its inherent potential to hold an iconic position in the city, and to serve as a symbol for growth in Kazan.
Thus, the project was conceived as a concentric twisting tower, referencing the graceful beauty of a whirling dervish spinning by the water. While inspired by the well-known Turkish performance, the twisting tower also serves a functional purpose, in providing a constantly changing relationship to the surrounding environment, and a unique experience on each level. The steel lattice structure, wrapping the floors, rotates and expands to form the base. The design of the core allows it to remain the same on all floors. There are 30 floors in the building and it is 150m tall. The column system is also a lattice structure that changes on all floors.
The Torque Rumi ONE project includes a residential tower sitting on a retail & commercial base. The lower levels will be dedicated to a mall & hotel, and the upper levels will be dedicated to residential units. The base steps as it approaches the towers, providing generous outdoor terraces & gardens at the plaza level.
