Osmos, Kazan City

kazan-city4

In collaboration with Dara Kirmizitoprak

As a contrast to the ‘typical tower building’, an alternate proposal was suggested in order to optimize views and spatial relationships. The building skin was adjusted in response to this approach. In response to an organic site grid, hard and soft landscapes were formed. The buildings were conceived to be constructed in two phases. After extensive research into the local climatic conditions in Kazan, the city’s extreme weather cycle became an influential component of the design process. We began looking to nature for inspiration, specifically focusing on the spring season. After a long winter, nature eventually prevails and blooms can be seen throughout the city.

As a result, the project’s early diagrams were influenced by floral growth patterns.

Building core variations were explored to arrive at different possibilities, and proposals attempted to optimize the floor plans for flexible circulations. Two towers were designed on this basis.

The building’s views are organized to provide a maximum level of variation, and the façade contributes to this. The hexagonal façade is porous, and allows for sufficient light while also creating enough shade for the users within the building.
