Harlem Housing, New York

This project is designed for New Housing, New YorkDesign Ideas Competition by GAD Architecture and SU11 architecture.
In contemporary urban life, the notion of dwelling has undergone a series of transformations. Our culture of everyday-life has long broken down the stricter separations between public and private domains and started to blur live, work and leisure activities into a series of complex relationships and mutually dependant conditions.
Home has become a hub for information, exchange, communication and connectivity in addition to remaining a place for retreat, calmness, security and containment. Existing building types, like the ‘Brownstone row-house’ do provide the former while all the issues of information, exchange and interaction are separately provided by added (and often hidden) technology rather than being a more integral part of the design concept.
This building aims to provide a large amount of flexibility on a programmatic level while also engaging the inspiring street life into its concept.
