Aqua, Istanbul

02

In collaboration with Dara KIRMIZITOPRAK

Aqua is a shopping mall on a 25,000m2 site in Florya, Istanbul.

The primary concept is to explore the theme of ‘tectonics’. Tectonics is defined as, “relating to the structure of the surface of the Earth, and the way it is formed, changed and moved by forces inside it”. From a distance, the layers on the surface of Aqua resemble a cliff at the water’s edge. Looking more closely, though, and it is evident that this seemingly natural structure is sculpted to form stairs, bridges, and is also separated to receive light between its layers. In the evening, there is an affect resembling a concealed blaze beneath the surface, as the structure filters the light that radiates from within. This cliff is further carved to form piers at the ground floor that stretch out over the sea.

There are VIP shops at the terrace level. The entry level is a landscaped plaza, and serves to conceal the shopping areas below. Here, shoppers may relax and enjoy their surroundings while shopping at the same time. Furthermore, the magnificent sea view compliments what is already an extraordinary shopping experience.
